First off, I think it's great that people want to help out newbies, I've spent a large amount of time explaining all kinds of things in order to help someone out. Anything to get someone off to a better start.
I think it's wrong, however, to classify the Cist belts as newbie only just because that's where newbies start. I think it's equally wrong to expect indies to afk mine somewhere other than a 1.0 system like Cist. But that's your perogative, so feel free to target jam my indy next time you see it parked in Cist. Just hope I actually am afk mining as I'll be sure to watch for you in low sec systems when I'm not, and I probably won't be in my indy :)
The other reason I don't think afk mining in Cist is an issue is this: As a newbie I mined in Gisleres because you could do so in a starter ship with starter weapons and a starter shield booster and get Omber for almost no risk. How is this giving newbies the shaft? Or did you mean the unimaginative newbie that can't think for themself?
People need to remember that MMORPGs evolve, especially EVE, and even more so since it's brand new and everything is changing at such a fast pace. I think a lot of posts on the forums are due to people being upset because their "great idea" was figured about by 1000 other people and now they have to come up with another one :) CCP's job isn't to enforce that nothing changes in EVE. I'm not saying anyone in this thread was implying so and I'm not singling any of you out, so don't feel like I'm picking on you personally. This is just something I've noticed throughout a lot of the threads I've read and felt like commenting on it.
So with that said, I'll offer a few things.
Advice to newbie miners:
This is the same advice I offer to any newbie that asks where they should mine. This is the same advice I've seen many other players give as well. Find a .8 or .9 and look for omber. Before long they too can have an iteron in Cist strip mining in 0 gravity, and it'll be faster than if they had stayed in Cist trying to make their million off lesser 'roids.
Concerning afk mining:
If it's an exploit I'm sure it'll be nerfed, but I don't think it is. Imagine a lazy space miner that wants to set up a ship and then take a nap, where would he go? Somewhere there's pirates? Or somewhere he can gain income for no risk while sleeping?
Advice to people that are upset because afk mining is leaving only veldspar in Cist's belts:
Mine veldspar. It's still better than nothing.
